THE TWELVE STEPS OF AA (THE HARD WAY)

  1. I admitted that I was powerful enough -- that I could solve my emotional problems myself and keep other people out of my life.
  2. Came to believe that there is no power greater than myself. Anybody who doubts it is insane.
  3. Made a decision to live my life without God and as I will. God does not understand me anyway.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of all persons I know, to stop them from deceiving me and abusing my good nature.
  5. Made them admit to me, God and all other human beings the exact nature of their wrongs.
  6. Was entirely ready to help them remove all their defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked them to remove their shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons who had harmed me, and waited patiently for a chance for revenge.
  9. Got even with them directly for such things wherever possible, except when to do so would have caused me any trouble.
  10. Continued to take inventories of my acquaintances and when they made mistakes, which happened frequently, I made them promptly admit it.
  11. Sought through concentration of my self-will to improve my personal influence on God, who does not understand me anyway, to have Him approve of my ideas as being the best and supply me with the power to carry them out.
  12. Having kept my emotional problems for many years as a result of these steps, I can suggest them warmly to all people, who do not want to loose their beloved status and who want to be left alone, to practice their neurosis in all their affairs.
